Athlete of the Month: November 2017
Mario Delgado
Meet the man behind the lens! If there’s a stunning snapshot of you soaring mid box jump (or keeled over post workout), Mario Delgado is likely responsible. A CrossFit 718 member since 2015, Mario is the box’s official photographer. And when he’s not making us all look like Games contenders, he’s crushing 30-minute metcons (his favorite type of workout) and fine-tuning his snatch. We all admire his artistry, dedication, and drive, which is why he’s November’s athlete of the month!
Enjoy our Q&A with Mario!
How did you discover CrossFit?
I was researching workout options besides globo gyms.
What made you stick with CrossFit?
I find it to be a very effective way to keep me active and healthy.
How do you make time for working out?
I just put in on my calendar. I sign up for classes on Sundays when I’m prepping my week so they’re there.
What’s your favorite type of WOD?
I like long WODs – anything that you see cap at 30 minutes or more. I like the strategizing part rather than just “work as hard and fast as you can.”
What recent PR are you most proud of?
That would be my triple snatch. I am feeling more comfortable with the bar and that particular complex movement and look forward to learning and improving.
What’s one goal that you’re currently working on?
To be consistent at movements I learn or get better at. Who was the person who said “It is not a PR until you hit it twice?”
You’re the photographer behind most of the photos taken at the box. What’s it like to photograph CrossFit athletes in action?
It is tricky because when an athlete is giving it all on the floor they don’t necessarily look like they’ve just walked out of the spa. So the challenge is to wait for those micro moments when someone looks fresh and capture the star in them.
What do you do when you’re not at the box?
I’m a professional photographer. I enjoy cooking, backpacking, power-napping, making playlists, and binge-watching shows. My newest hobby is parenting a cat. Her name is Grey.
