Athlete of the Month: January 2017
Sky Holden
If you’re looking for a model 718 athlete, Sky Holden is your man. We don’t say that just because he consistently works to improve his skills and set new PRs. He’s also been an active member of our community since 2012, participating in local competitions and events, and he shares his enthusiasm for CrossFit by involving his kids, wife, and brother. As a family-friendly, mom and pop business, we love that!
Read our Q&A with Sky, and get to know January’s athlete of the month!
How did you learn about CrossFit?
I had a few friends who had joined CrossFit 718 and had great results. This was my first “group exercise” class, so I was skeptical.
What kinds of changes have you noticed since you started?
From a physical standpoint, CrossFit completely changed me. At first, I had to buy new clothes as I got lean pretty fast. Since then, I’ve put on more muscle so I’ve had to adjust accordingly. Additionally, my endurance and overall health were very positively impacted.
Why do you do CrossFit?
Two reasons: 1. CrossFit is the best ROI workout that I’ve experienced. The fun and challenging WODs keep me in shape, and I never get bored. 2. The community. It provides the perfect combination of competition and collaboration. I thrive off of the social aspect of the box.
How do you make time for working out?
I aim for four times a week, and doing early morning WODs is the only way I can make it work (shout out to the legendary 6 a.m. Strong crew!) I also work out on the weekends and enjoy the partner WODs.
What’s your favorite lift or movement?
It’s not easy being tall in the CrossFit world, but my favorite Oly lift is the power clean, as I can get a lot of speed on the bar due to my height. And rowing. Lots and lots of rowing…
What recent PR are you most proud of?
I was thrilled to beat my Grace PR recently with a time of 3:21.
What goal are you currently working on?
Double-unders continue to haunt me. They are an elusive beast that I will capture and conquer in 2017.
What’s your Fran time?
8:21Rx. Still a terrible WOD for me, but I was happy to finish it Rx.
What do you do when you’re not at the box?
I lead a sales team in the mobile advertising industry. I’m always trying to make my wife and kids laugh. I play indoor volleyball, and I’m a movie enthusiast.
