Athlete of the Month: September 2016
Elaine Kanak

Elaine Kanak
September is a special month for Elaine Kanak, and not just because she’s this month’s featured athlete. In just a few short weeks, she’ll be welcoming her first child into the world! We’re beyond impressed that she’s been able to WOD (for two!) well into her third trimester, and we can’t wait to meet the little guy!
Read our Q&A with Elaine to learn more about how CrossFit has not only improved Elaine’s overall concentration and confidence, but also helped her stay active and healthy throughout her pregnancy.
How did you discover CrossFit?
I initially learned about CrossFit from a friend that opened a box in Chicago.
What kinds of changes have you noticed since starting CrossFit?
I think CrossFit has improved my concentration and confidence. I’ve gotten a little bigger around the middle recently…but guess I can’t blame CrossFit for that. 🙂
What’s it been like to CrossFit while pregnant?
It’s been great! I’m expecting my first, a baby boy, September 21st. Dariel, Tammy, and Iz have all been really supportive, and their expertise has given me the confidence to keep at it. They’ve helped me modify workouts to stay safe and active through my nine-month stretch. I know a lot of women have a hard time staying active while pregnant, particularly in the third trimester, so I feel really lucky to be with CrossFit 718. CrossFitting while pregnant has required a shift in mind-set from trying to push myself and max out to trying to maintain fitness and be aware of my limits.
How do you make time for working out?
I try to make a habit of getting to the box for the 6 a.m. class a few times a week. If I left it until after work I’d never make it. At 5:45 a.m. I’m on autopilot.
What’s your favorite movement?
In my current condition, I’m enjoying jerks, pregnant burpees (going back to regular burpees is going to be tough), and the assault bike. I miss cleans. They’re hard to do with a baby bump in the way.
What recent achievement are you most proud of?
I finished Grace in 3:37 in late July…but with very light kettlebells. 🙂 Mostly I’m just proud that I’m still making it to the box regularly at 35 weeks pregnant.
What goal are you working on?
Right now I’m just focused on staying healthy until I have the baby, and then getting back to my pre-pregnancy fitness levels.
What’s your Fran time?
2:37… Just kidding. I have no idea!
What do you do when you’re not at the box?
I live with my husband and our cat in Windsor Terrace. Neither of them are CrossFitters, but I am holding out hope for the baby. I’m in marketing for American Express. I’ve run four marathons with my mom, have a wine club with some girlfriends, and volunteer with Careers through the Culinary Arts Program.
Yay Elaine!! You are such a bad ass 🙂
Yay, Elaine! Inspirational to all of us.
6 am strong! Way to go Elaine.
